Borehole Investigation

Fugro Nigeria Limited uses Failing rig 1500 and Pilcon rigs 1.5 or 2 tons to obtain soil samples for  information on the classification of soil types, samples which can be examined at site or in the laboratory and data for correlation with the results of penetration tests.

In carrying out the Borehole investigation, the following procedures are adhered to:

  • Sampling, handling and preservation are in accordance with the relevant ASTM standard practices.

  • Samples are not allowed to remain in the open for more than one hour, and they are protected at all times from exposure to temperatures below 5°C and above 35°C.

  • Bulk samples are taken continuously. They are representative of the zone from which they have been taken. Within the limits of the zone being sampled, all recovered soil are placed on a suitable tray, as care is being taken to retain the fines of water granular soils.

  • In cohesive soils, undisturbed samples are taken at 1.5-meter intervals and at changes of strata. In cohesionless soils, representative sample are taken at 1.5-meter intervals and at changes of strata.

  • All sample are durably labeled for identification, and indelible ink are used in order that the identification does not deteriorate with time.

  • Samples sent to the laboratory for testing are packed and transported in such a way that undisturbed samples arrive in an undisturbed state.

  • Samples taken from over consolidated soil are preserved in such a manner as to exclude swelling of samples.

  • Our geotechnical laboratory will retain all samples in safekeeping for a minimum of six months, but depends on the individual clients requirements. Thereafter, the samples may be disposed of on receipt of written consent from the principal.
